Classroom Technology Rules
Students who bring devices like smart phones, tablets, laptops, and chrome books to school are prompting teachers and administrators to reconsider the role of technology in the classroom. Using technology in the classroom promotes student learning and students being more engaged in their lessons.
While our schools have firewalls, security software and systems like mobile device managers to control what students can access on their devices, we teachers need to have a plan in place to maintain a constructive learning environment and prevent distractions beyond just blocking websites.
Here are 6 ways that we “teachers” can manage the use of technology in the classroom.
- Establish an Electronics Policy.
· Teachers who plan to use technology in the classroom should clearly explain what rules are for acceptable use.
- Create Consequences without disrupting classwork.
· Classroom rules on technology only hold up if the teacher enforces them.
- Use key phrases to restore student attention.
· Using repeatable phrases like “all eyes on me” or “close and flip your devices” will train students to react quickly.
- Look over their shoulders.
· Teachers who want to keep students on task during technology-based assignments will need to proactively monitor in class activity.
- Begin Assignments “offline”.
· To make sure students understand their assignments, and prevent distractions, provide instructions before students switch on their devices.
- Put students to work.
- While teachers have the authority of subject matter, most students know more about technology than many teachers. Allow students to assist there classmates during activities.
